Why do you not accept insurance?

  • Confidentiality
  • Save money in the long run
  • No insurance limitations

Insurance companies are varied in their mental health coverage.  They require an excess of paperwork and an official clinical diagnosis for reimbursement.  What most clients do not know is that their health and life insurance premiums may be increased due to a mental health diagnosis. This means that for your clinician to be paid by the insurance company, they must report an official diagnostic code such as depression, anxiety, or personality disorder. This diagnosis will be on your permanent health record forever. This diagnosis can affect your ability to get life insurance or significantly increase your health insurance premium rates. At The MindSpa, we will NOT report any diagnostic information to an outside insurance source.

At The MindSpa, we value your privacy and feel that an outside party should not have information about you and your family.  However, at your request, we can provide a reimbursement receipt for clients to submit to their individual insurance company for direct reimbursement.

Our appointment prices often cost less than other private counseling practices simply because we generate less billing and paperwork.  Appointments are comparable in pricing to other personal health services.  You can also save up to 30% per session by purchasing Custom Counseling Appointment Packages.

How many sessions do I need to attend for my situation?

For most people, the first session is for the counselor to understand your history, your situation, and understand your goals for counseling. The second session is where real work begins for you and the counselor. Homework assignments may be given and you may even practice new strategies to use at home and during the session. The third session and beyond is about evaluating how things are going, what else needs to be modified, and how the homework/new skills are progressing. Sometimes folks will come back several months later for a tune-up to re-evaluate progress and make a few adjustments so that they do not fall back into poor habits or behaviors.

Each situation is different, but at the end of the day, you are in control of how many or how few counseling sessions you need. You are not limited by any insurance or corporate plan limitations.

    Who should attend the session?

You make the first step in bringing about change in your life by scheduling the first appointment and discussing your concerns with your counselor.
You are in control of who should attend.
It is recommended for couples that both partners attend.
For families, it is encouraged that the entire family over the age of five attend at least the first session.
We want everyone involved to be on the same page and be free to contribute their side of the situation.
At the same time, we realize that it can be difficult to bring unwilling people to sessions, so we ultimately want you make the decision who should attend custom counseling appointments.

What do I need to bring to an appointment?

Please complete the History Form prior to your appointment.  Download here

The History Form is similar to what a physician may ask about things in your history that may affect treatment.  Your counselor will find the information useful in understanding your situation fully.
If you do not complete the paperwork at home, you may want to arrive to your appointment 15 minutes early.  Please arrive on time, since counselors need to follow a strict timetable for the consideration of all the following clients.

    What is a counselor?

  • Licensed Professional Counselors are Masters level trained professionals who have passed a state-certified licensing examination.  They are trained in empathetic listening and various therapeutic interventions to help people get along better.

  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists are Masters level trained professionals focused on family systems and listening methods to help families function in a healthy manner.

  • Psychiatrists are Medical Doctors trained in the scientific method and can prescribe medication.

  • Psychologists are PhD level trained professionals focused on testing and other scientific treatment procedures.

  • Social Workers are Bachelor or Master level trained professionals who are focused on connecting people with services.

The MindSpa only employs Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Social Workers with a Masters Degree who are trained in counseling interventions.  We believe in focusing on the positives of a client and their situation as opposed to labeling a diagnosis on the individual.
